Cassava Flour
Feed-grade cassava flour, also called cassava meal or cassava powder, is made from dried cassava roots ground with the fibre retained. It is a carbohydrate (energy) ingredient for livestock feed and aqua feed, not a bakery or food flour. MANTA works with producers in Vietnam to supply cassava flour to international markets.
Applications
- Fish feed (floating and sinking pellets)
- Selected shrimp feed formulas (energy part)
- Compound feed for pigs and poultry
What Cassava Flour is.
Cassava flour is made in Vietnam from locally grown roots. Vietnam is one of the world’s main exporters of cassava products. In feed, cassava flour is used mainly as an energy source in place of part of the corn or broken rice. Its starch swells and sets (gelatinises) during extrusion or steam pelleting and adds binding, which helps pellets keep their shape. HS code 1106.20.
Judge cassava flour as an energy ingredient, not a protein. Starch, sand and residual HCN figures matter most. For a refined binder, see tapioca starch.
Key variables
- Starch content
- The main value driver. Confirm the minimum and the test method.
- Moisture
- Review against storage and shipping time to limit mould risk.
- Crude fibre and ash
- Confirm limits against the specification.
- Sand and acid-insoluble ash
- Sand lowers pellet quality and wears dies and extruders.
- Residual hydrogen cyanide (HCN)
- Drying and processing can reduce cyanogenic compounds; residual levels vary, so confirm the limit and the test method.
- Aflatoxin and other mycotoxins
- Confirm limits against the destination-market rules.
- Particle size
- Align with the grinding and pelleting process.
- Packaging and storage
- Align bag type, loading and storage requirements.
Quality grades and available origins.
Cassava flour is a plant ingredient with no animal-origin restrictions. Documents usually include a phytosanitary certificate, a certificate of origin (for example Form D for ASEAN destinations or Form E for China) and a COA per lot. Some buyers also ask for a fumigation certificate. Exact requirements depend on the destination country.

Questions about Cassava Flour.
What is cassava flour in animal feed?
Cassava flour is dried, ground cassava root with the fibre retained. In feed it is used as an energy source, and its starch adds binding during pelleting or extrusion.
Is cassava flour a protein source?
No. Cassava flour is a carbohydrate ingredient with low protein. It is formulated alongside protein sources such as fish meal, poultry meal or soybean meal, not in place of them.
What is the difference between cassava flour and tapioca starch?
Cassava flour is the whole dried root, ground, with fibre. Tapioca starch is refined from the root and is almost pure starch. Cassava flour is mainly an energy ingredient; tapioca starch is mainly a binder.
Can cassava flour replace corn in feed?
It can replace part of the corn as an energy source in many formulas. The share depends on the species, the formula and the price of each ingredient, and is decided by the feed mill's nutritionist.
What is the HS code for cassava flour?
Cassava flour is usually classified under HS 1106.20 (flour and meal of roots and tubers). Dried cassava chips are a different product under HS 0714.10. Confirm the code with the customs authority of the destination country.
Which documents are usually required for cassava flour from Vietnam?
Usually a phytosanitary certificate, a certificate of origin and a COA per lot, plus a fumigation certificate where the buyer requires it. Requirements are confirmed per contract.
