Feed ingredient sourcing for Vietnam and Southeast Asia: a 2026 market outlook

Vietnam and Southeast Asia are among the most import-dependent feed markets in the world. This outlook covers three published data points that matter to buyers and suppliers of animal proteins and marine ingredients.

Global feed production is still growing

The Alltech Agri-Food Outlook 2026 (released April 2026) reports that global feed production rose 2.9% in 2025, to an estimated 1.44 billion tonnes. The survey covered 142 countries and 38,837 feed mills. China, the United States and Brazil, the top three producers, made up 47.7% of global tonnage. Alltech says growth is uneven and increasingly regional. It says productivity and structural change drive growth more than herd expansion does.

Marine ingredient supply rose in 2025

IFFO, the marine ingredients organisation, projected 2025 global production of about 5.6 million tonnes of fishmeal and 1.2 to 1.3 million tonnes of fish oil. From January to July 2025, production rose year on year: fishmeal by about 8% and fish oil by about 5%. Fishmeal use in aquaculture was also higher than in 2024. Peru produces about 20% of global output in an average year, so regional changes matter. Peru, Spain and the Iceland/North Atlantic region all fell year on year, even though the global total rose.

Vietnam’s import demand keeps rising

The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service forecasts that Vietnam’s feed-ingredient import demand will rise about 2.6% in 2025, to roughly 20.3 million tonnes. Corn (around 8.2 million tonnes) and soybean meal (around 6 million tonnes) are the largest volumes. Aquaculture is a main driver of growth. Vietnam’s aquaculture output was near 6 million tonnes in 2025. About 1.6 million tonnes of new feed-mill capacity started up across the country in 2024 and early 2025.

What this means for buyers and suppliers

Feed manufacturers, pet food companies and aqua feed companies in Vietnam and Southeast Asia face firm aquaculture demand and rising marine-ingredient supply. Both support planning ahead for fishmeal and animal-protein purchases. But supply also shifts by region, and Peru’s lower output is one example. So confirm origin, grade and specification for each shipment. Do not assume supply is fixed.

MANTA buys and sells as principal. We confirm specification and origin in each contract, and the documents come with every shipment.
