Indonesia imported 555,000 tonnes of meat and bone meal in 2025

Source-aware

Indonesia imported 554,502 tonnes of meat and bone meal (MBM) in 2025, up 7.7% from 514,797 tonnes in 2024, according to USDA’s Jakarta post. Feed mills use imported MBM as a protein source, and it carries a 0% import duty. The figures below come from the April 2026 Grain and Feed Annual (report ID2026-0010), which cites Indonesia National Single Window and Trade Data Monitor data.

Imports of MBM and other feed ingredients

Tonnes 2024 2025 Change Duty
Meat and bone meal (HS 230110) 514,797 554,502 + 7.7 % 0 %
Distillers dried grains (DDGS) 1,013,093 966,454 − 4.6 % 5 %
Corn gluten meal 281,869 136,120 − 51.7 % 5 %
Canola meal 24,588 19,038 − 22.6 % 5 %

The percentage changes are MANTA’s calculation from USDA’s table. MBM was the only one of these four ingredients to grow in 2025. January 2026 MBM imports were 32,314 tonnes against 46,418 tonnes in January 2025 (MANTA’s calculation: − 30%); one month is not a trend.

Where the MBM came from

In 2025, Indonesian feed mills imported most of their MBM from the United States (53%), New Zealand (14%), Brazil (11%) and Canada (11%). The remaining 11% came from other origins.

Why feed demand is rising

  • Feed output. The feed mills association (GPMT) expects feed production to rise 6% to 22.5 million tonnes in 2025/26 from 21.2 million tonnes, and 5% to 23.6 million tonnes in 2026/27.
  • Poultry dominates. Poultry consumes about 90% of domestic animal feed. Aquaculture accounts for 6%, cattle and swine for the remaining 4%.
  • School meals. The Free Nutritious Meals programme (MBG) launched on 6 January 2025 and targets 82.9 million beneficiaries. By 9 March 2026, 61.62 million people had received meals from more than 25,000 kitchens. USDA reports that the programme adds demand for about 1 million tonnes of chicken meat. Producers now harvest broilers at 35 to 40 days and 2.2 to 2.5 kg, against about 30 days and 1.4 to 1.8 kg before, which raises feed use per bird.
  • Aquafeed. Aquafeed production is estimated to rise 9% to 1.6 million tonnes in 2025/26 and 5% to 1.7 million tonnes in 2026/27, as the shrimp sector recovers from the 2024/25 contraction.

Import policy to watch

The same report describes tighter state control of feed imports for 2025/26. Only state-owned companies may import corn for feed. A subsidiary of the state-owned ID Food holds exclusive rights to import 1.5 million tonnes of feed wheat and 60% of the 5 to 6 million tonnes of soybean meal that the private sector could previously import. The report does not say that these measures apply to MBM, whose duty remains 0%. Buyers should confirm the current rules for each product with the importing party’s authorities.

What this means for buyers

This is MANTA’s reading of the figures, not a price forecast.

  • MBM is an established protein source in Indonesian feed formulations. Volumes rose in 2025 while other imported ingredients fell.
  • Origin concentration is high. Four origins supplied 89% of 2025 imports. Buyers and importers who compare more origins gain flexibility if one origin is short or restricted.
  • Rules change. Import policy for feed ingredients moved quickly in 2025/26. Check eligibility, species and documentation for each lot and destination before contracting.
